When I first arrived on campus, honestly, I was overwhelmed. I knew there were going to be a lot of students. But coming from a small town, it was more of a shock than I thought. During Welcome Week I kept looking for that special group of friends. But I discovered making new friends can be tough no matter where you are. Halfway into my first semester things changed. I really started to click with my roommates and a couple of other people. Suddenly, I had my circle of friends. Now every Thursday night we go to the MSU Union for the free bowling and billiards. Spartan Lanes, the bowling alley, is deep in the basement of the Union so we just hop on the CATA bus, which travels through campus, and we’re there.
Okay — here’s the rundown on the MSU food. The best dining hall is a toss up between Akers Hall and Hubbard Hall. Both have great menus, including a salad bar that would surpass a professional restaurant. My favorite dish is the Chipotle BBQ ribs with coleslaw and a glass of lemonade — it’s at Hubbard. Both halls also have an extensive dessert selection of soft-serve ice cream, pastries and cake. You can find good homemade ice cream at the MSU Dairy Store — grabbing a cone on the way home from class is absolutely heaven. Beware, the battle against the freshman fifteen is a constant struggle…yet so tasty.
I’ve always felt a “call” to serve and positively influence others in some way, shape or form. I don’t think a standard desk job would work for me and that’s why I’m thinking law enforcement would be good. My major is criminal justice and last semester I took a great student leadership course specifically designed for my major. Part of the course was to do a service-learning project so I chose to sign up for Operation Lot Watch. We learn about police work by taking MSU Department of Police and Public Safety vehicles to the commuter parking lots and watching for suspicious activity. The class has been a great learning tool, and I’ve met some great mentors on the MSU police force as a result.

My friends and I enjoy playing Monopoly. Although we lack furniture, the floor works just fine.
